Brantford Power applies for rate adjustment
BRANTFORD - Brantford Power Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board for a rate adjustment to the local electricity distribution charge scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2006.
If approved, the adjustment is expected to add $6.61 to the average monthly residential electricity bill.
The local distribution charge, which makes up approximately 18 per cent of the total electricity bill, covers Brantford Power’s costs to build and maintain the local system and to deliver electricity to homes and businesses. It does not cover the actual cost of the commodity electricity.
Brantford Power, owned by the City of Brantford, does not set the price of electricity but collects this money from customers at cost and pays it directly to its suppliers.
The 2006 adjustment in the distribution charge will cover the effects of inflation, an increase in retail transmission fees, recovery of costs related to the new Powerline Transformer Station and a recovery of some deferred costs such as costs to purchase power that the municipal utility could not previously pass onto customers.
The rate application includes additional electricity conservation and demand management programming to continue some of the key conservation programs started in 2005.
The cost recovery will allow Brantford Power to resume voltage conversion projects in three Brantford subdivisions that have been deferred since 2001. The conversion projects in Brantford, which began in 1993, were undertaken to improve reliability, reduce system losses and increase overall customer satisfaction.
