Managing Your Electrical Usage
Calculating Your Power Usage
Most appliances and other electrical equipment have a nameplate that indicates the power
requirements. To calculate the wattage for any appliance, use the formulas below:
For single phase equipment (any residential equipment):
Watts = volts x amps
i.e. Equipment using 120 volts and 10 amps would use:
120 x 10 = 1, 200 watts or 1. 2 kilowatts
For three phase equipment (found in some commercial and most industrial equipment):
Watts = volts x amps x 1.732
(1.732 is the square root of 3)
i.e. A three phase motor, using 600 volts and drawing 30 amps would use: 600 x 30 x 1.732 =
31,176 watts or 31.176 kilowatts
Note: Calculation based on unity power factor. If the power factor is known, multiply above
calculation x power factor to give a more accurate estimate.
Alternatively, by using the Appliance Usage Chart on this web site, you should be able to
estimate your electricity use fairly closely by adding up your own stock of appliances.
